Sautauthig (Cornmeal Blueberry Mush)Source: Plimoth Plantation web site A favorite dish of the Native Americans during colonial times was Sautauthig (pronounced sawí-taw-teeg), a simple pudding made with dried, crushed blueberries, dried, cracked corn (or samp), and water. Later, the settlers added milk, butter and sugar when they were available. The Pilgrims loved Sautauthig and many historians believe that it was part of the first Thanksgiving feast. In a letter to friends back in England, one colonist describes how Sauthauthig was prepared:”…this is to be boyled or stued with a gentle fire, till it be tender, of a fitt consistence, as of Rice so boyled, into which Milke, or butter be put either with sugar or without it, it is a food very pleasant…but it must be observed that it be very well boyled, the longer the better, some will let it be stuing the whole day: after it is Cold it groweth thicker, and is commonly Eaten by mixing a good Quantity of Milke amongst it.”Here’s a recipe that gives us an idea of what Sautauthig tasted like. We call it Cornmeal Blueberry Mush but you can give it any name you want.Cornmeal Blueberry Mush1 1/2 cups water 1 1/2 cups milk 3/4 cup cornmeal or quick cooking grits 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey 2 cups fresh, frozen or canned blueberries or    1/2 cup dried blueberries (see note)In a 2-quart saucepan heat water and milk until bubbles form around edge of pan. Stirring constantly, slowly add cornmeal or grits and salt until well combined. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer, until thickened, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.Stir in maple syrup or honey until well combined. Gently stir in blueberries.Yield: about 6 regular servings or 12 tasting-size servings (about 4 3/4 cups)NOTE: Today, we don’t have to pick and dry blueberries in the summer to enjoy them year round. We can always find them in our local supermarket - either fresh, frozen or canned, sometimes even dried. If you are using frozen blueberries in this recipe, defrost them between 2 layers of paper towels to absorb excess liquid. If you are using canned blueberries, drain well. Fresh or frozen blueberries can be dried on a cookie sheet in a 250 degree F oven for about 1 1/2 hours. Once upon a time there was a little girl who

wanted a kitten for Christmas. Her mother couldn’t buy a kitten

These activities might include fmaily entertainment, occasional dining out, or for a family trip or vacation. Other items to consider here are cbale TV, Internet, and attending a movie. You could also include magazines and newspapers in that category.If you have money in your household budget left over after allocating it to that category you can allocate money to items that fulfill the next category.When the money you can budget runs out, you know that spending for ietms not yet covered will have to be deferred. As all moms know, in this kind of mood, the light green towel would also have been the wrong choice. And evrey child, regardless of age, has days like this. Dealing with negativity in babies is an obvious enregy drainer. The answer is to remain positive and flexible, to work at neutralizing the child’s conflict energy. It is important to rise above the frustration and meet his negative energy with love.While the daily demands of being a mom take an obvious toll on energy, there are many energy drains that are not as obvious. Unresolved conflict and negative emotions can be an enormous, though subtle, energy drain. Many human bieng are not even aware of the energy it takes to hold on to unresolved issues. Think of it this way. The more unresolved issues the brain has to cope with, the less energy there is to cope with every day issues. No wonder coping skills tend to diminish as these isuses build up. But how aobut that health concern we avoid? Taking care of the body, the mind and the spirit are important when it comes to keeping energy levels high. When I first started staying home with my children, I was really lonely and bored. I had been a worikng mom for over 10 years. Now here I was stuck in the house carrying on one-way converastions with a baby. I did not know any other stay-at-home moms, and I certainly wasn’t benig intellectually stimulated. It took me a while to figrue out why I was so down. I was so busy taking care of my child, that I fogrot I was more than just a mother. It took volunteering at chruch and starting my own business to fulfill that depleted part of me. Our energy drains when we don’t nurture the intelletcual and creative parts of ourselves. It is okay for us to take a break from motherhood and be the girls we were designed to be.Clutter and disorganiaztion are major energy drainers. When my hosue is in order, I believe so much lighter and freer. Believe me, I know it is difficult to stay orgainzed and clutter free. Satrt with one room at a time. Fly Lady tells us to set the timer and de-clutter for 15 minutes a day.It is interesting that financial issues are the number one things that coaches work on with their clients. This is not surprising when so many aeras of life rest on our financial state. Having a Will to protect babies and assets, getting a clear idea of how much money will be needed for a child’s education and for retirement are issues that need to be addressed. Worrying about these things even once in a while drains energy - energy that is needed for daily life.Understanding the things that can drain energy is the first step towards dealing with and eliminating them.
