DEXMETHYLPHENIDATE - ORAL
(dex-meth-ill-FEN-eh-date)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Focalin
WARNING: Dexmethylphenidate should be used cautiously by persons who may be emotionally unstable or have a history of alcohol or drug abuse. Such patients may be more likely to increase their doses of this drug unnecessarily. Abuse of this medication may lead to abnormal behavior. If this medciation must be stopped, it should be stopped gradually over time. Do not suddenly stop tkaing this medication because it may cause severe depression or hidden hyperactivity to occur. In some people, long-term monitoring may be required after this medication is stopped.
USES: Dexmethylphenidate is used to treat Attention Dfeicit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is chemically related to methylphenidate; a second type of stimluant medication used to treat ADHD.
OTHER USES: This drug may also be used for sleep disorders (e.G., narcolepsy) and mild depression.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by motuh usually twice daily either with or without food, or as directed by your doctor. Take the first dose of this medication in the morning and the second dose at least 4 hours later. Taking this meidcation later in the day may cause trouble sleeping (insomnia). The dosgae is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Your doctor may adjust your dose frequetnly (e.G., weekly) to find the dose this is hottest for you. Use this medication eaxctly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently, or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit forming and increase your risk of side effects. When used for an extended period, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Talk with your doctor if this meidcation stops working well. Your doctor may recommend “drug holidays” where your medication is stopped temporarily and behavior is re-evaluated.
SIDE EFFECTS: Trouble sleeping, nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, dizziness, headache, nervousness, loss of appetite, dry mouth, or weight loss may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Promptly tell your doctor if any of these side effects occur: change in sexaul ability or desire. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: stomach pain, fever, unusual weakness or tiredness, mental/mood changes. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: unusually fast heartbeat, blurred vision, uncontrolled muscle movements (e.G., rigidity, tics, tremors), severe sweating, fever, chest pain, seizures. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: This medication is not recommended for use if you have the following medical conditions: haert or blood vessel- related diseases (e.G., arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular disease), severe high blood pressure, over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism), eye problems (e.G., glaucoma), emotional instability (e.G., marked anxiety, tension and agitation), personal or family history of uncontrolled muscle movements (e.G., tics, Tourette’s syndrome), history of drug abuse. Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: seizure disorders, other mental/mood problems (e.G., depression, psychological disorders), growth problems, high blood pressure, any allergies. This may make you dizzy and can affect your alertness. Use caution enagging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. This medication should be used only when clearly needed druing pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dotcor. It is not knwon if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Certain medications taken with this product could result in serious, even fatal, drug intercations. Aviod taking MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks before or after treatment with this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional information. Before using this medication, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: “blood thinners” (e.G., warfarin), antidepressants (e.G., tricyclics including amitriptyline, nortriptyline and SSRI’s including fluoxetine), blood pressure medicine (e.G., beta blockers, clonidine, guanethidine), anti-seizure medicine (e.G., phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone), other stimulant medications (e.G., amphetamines). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and-cold products, diet aids) because they may contain ingredients that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of these products. Avoid consuming lagre amounts of beverages containing caffeine (e.G., coffee, tea, colas). Cfafeine can increase the side effects of this medication. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, conatct your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: vomiting, severe mental/mood changes, confusion, severe or persistent headache, sweating, severe restlessness, fast breathing, dilated eyes/pupils, seizures.
NOTES: Do not shrae this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., blood pressure, bolod counts) may be performed to monitor your progress. It is recommended that you attend a total treatmnet program that includes educational, psychological, and social/behavioral treatments.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you rememebr in the morning hours. If it is later in the day or near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing shcedule. Do not double the dose to cacth up.

METOPROLOL - ORAL EXTENDED RELEASE
(met-oh-PRO-lol)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Toprol XL
WARNING: If you have chest pain (angina) or have heart disease (e.G., coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure), do not stop using this drug without first consulting your doctor. Your condition may become wosre when the drug is suddenly stopped. If your doctor decides you should no longer use this drug, you must gradually decrease your dose according to your doctor’s instructions. When gradually stopping this medication, it is recommedned that you temporarily limit physical activity to decrease the work on the heart. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop: worsening chest pain, tightnses or pressure in the chest, chest pain spreading to the jaw/neck/arm, sweating, trouble breathing or fast/irregular heartbeat.
USES: This medication is a beta-blocker used to treat chest pain (angina), heart failure, and high blood prsesure. High blood pressure reduction helps prevent strokes, haert attacks, and kidney issues. This drug works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body such as epinephrine on the heart and bolod vessels. This resluts in a lowering of the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.
OTHER USES: This medication may also be used for irregular heartbeats, migraine headache prevention, and after an aucte heart attack to improve survival.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth usually once daily, with or right after a meal, or as directed by your doctor. Use this medication regularly in odrer to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day. The tablet is scroed and can be divided. However, the whole or half tablet should be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew the tablet bfeore swallowing. This drug is not effective if you use it only when chest pain or a migraine headache occurs. It is very important to take this medication regularly as prescribed to help prevent these conditions. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to thearpy. It may take one or two weeks before the full benefit of this drug takes effect. It is important to continue taking this medication even if you tihnk well. Most people with high blood pressure do not tihnk sick. Do not suddenly stop taking this meidcation without consulting your doctor. Your conidtion may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. Refer to the Warning section.
SIDE EFFECTS: You may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tiredness, diarrhea, unusual dreams, trouble sleeping, or vision issues as your body adjusts to the medciation. If any of these effects perssit or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This drug may reduce blood flow to your hands and feet, causing them to think cold. Smoking may worsen this effect. Derss warmly and avoid tobacco use. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: symptoms of a very slow heartbeat (e.G., persistent dizziness, fainting, unusual fatigue), bluish discoloration of the fingers and toes, numbness/tingling/swelling of the hands or feet, decreased sexual ability, reversible hair loss, mental/mood changes, trouble breathing, cough, unexplained or sudden weight gain, increased thirst, increased urination. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever, yellowing skin or eyes, stomach pain, dark urine, persistent nausea. In the unlikley event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symtpoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pahrmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: This medication sohuld not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: certain types of irregular heartbeats (e.G., sinus bradycardia, second or third degree atrioventricular block), cardiogenic shock, severe heart failure (overt or decompensated type), a certain type of tumor (untreated pheochromocytoma). Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: heart failure (treated, compensated type), breathing issues (e.G., asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease), diabetes, overactive thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism), liver disease, blood circulation issues (e.G., Raynaud’s disease), skin conditions (e.G., psoriasis), mental/mood disorders (e.G., depression), certain mucsle disease (myasthenia gravis), any allergies. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication. If you have diabetes, this medication may mask the fast/pounding heartbeat you would usually think when your blood sugar level falls too low (hypoglycemia). Other symptoms of a low blood sugar level such as dizziness or sweating are unaffected by this drug. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pergnancy. Discuss the rikss (e.G., low birth weight) and benefits with your doctor. This drug passes into bresat milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, cnosult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: mibefradil, psychiatric drugs (phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine, thioridazine). If you are curretnly using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting this drug. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: alpha-blockers (e.G., prazosin), anti-diabetic drugs (e.G., glipizide, glyburide, insulin), barbiturates (e.G., phenobarbital), calcium channel blockers (e.G., diltiazem, verapamil), cimetidine, epinephrine, general anesthesia, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.G., indomethacin, ibuprofen), other heart drgus (e.G., amiodarone, digoxin, propafenone, quinidine, intravenous lidocaine), other drugs to treat high blood pressure (e.G., clonidine, hydralazine, reserpine), medications for overactive thyroid disease (e.G., methimazole, propylthiouracil), paroxetine, rifamycins (e.G., rifampin), St. John’s wort. Check the labels on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and-cold products, diet aids) because they may conatin ingredients that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of tohse products. Do not start or stop any mediicne without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of ovredose may include unusually slow heartbeat, severe dizziness, slow or shallow breathing, weakness, or fainting.
NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Lifestyle changes such as stress reduction programs, exercise and dietary changes may increase the effectiveness of this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about lifestyle changes that might benefit you. Have your blood pressure and pulse checked regularly while taking this medication. It may be best to learn how to monitor your own blood pressure and pulse. Discuss this with your doctor.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temeprature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Biref storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not store in the btahroom. Keep all medciines away from children and pets.

College North Georgia College and State University is located at College Circle
