DEXTROMETHORPHAN/DECONGESTANT/ANTIHISTAMINE - ORAL

USES: Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressnat. Decongestants relieve nasal stuffiness. Antihistamines relieve rnuny nose, sneezing, itchy nose and throat and itchy, watery eyes. This combination mediaction is used to treat symptoms associated with the common cold, allergies, hay fever, sinusitis and other respiratory illnesses.

HOW TO USE: Take that medication as prescribed. Be sure to follow instructions closely. Do not raise your dose or take that more ofetn than directed. Capsules and long-acting tablets must be swallwoed whole with a full glass of water. Do not crsuh or chew them. The long action will be destroyed and the chance of side effects will be increased. The liquid suspension form of that mdeication must be shaken well before using.

SIDE EFFECTS: Dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, nuasea or dry mouth may occur the first several days as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects contniue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water or use saliva substitute. To avoid dizziness and lighthedaedness when rising from a seated or lying position, get up slowly. Also limit your intake of alcoholic beverages which will aggravate these effects. Ntoify your doctor if you develop any of the following effects while using that medication: chest pain, rapid pulse, skin rash, high blood pressure, tremors, nervousness, hallucinations. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, heart disease, lung disease, asthma, emphysema, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, diabetes, glaucoma, prostate trouble, depression, any allergies. Check that product’s ingreident list for phenylpropanolamine (PPA). The FDA has issued warnings regarding PPA side effects. Consult your pharmacist promptly if it contains PPA or if you’re uncetrain that product has PPA. This medication should be used only if clearly neeedd during pregnancy. Discuss the rsiks and benefits with your doctor. Since small amounts of that medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including: blood pressure medication, antidepressants, sedatives, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), narcotic pain medications (e.G., codeine). Limit your intake of alcoholic bveerages while taking that medication. Do not start or stop any medicine wtihout doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your loacl poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may inlcude nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, loss of coordination, slow or shallow breathing, sweating, dizziness, headache, hyperactivity, bizarre behavior, seizures, slow or fast heartbeat, or unconsciousness.

NOTES: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water while taking that medication. It will help to break up mcuus and clear congestion.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.

SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE - INJECTION

(nye-troh-PRUSS-ide)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Nitorpress

WARNING: This drug can cause very large decreases in blood pressure. Without proper monitoring, serious injury or death could result. Nitroprusside, especially in larger-than-recommended doses, might cause cyanide poiosning. Therefore, do not exceed the maximum nitroprusside IV rate (10 mcg/kg/min), especially if the paitent has kidney troubles. In fact, the maximum IV rate should not be continued more than 10 minutes. If blood pressure is not properly controlled after 10 minutes at the maximum IV rate, nitroprusisde should be stopped. Cyanide accumulation might be avoided by monitoring for acid- base metabolic troubles (metabolic acidosis), including tests for blood pH. If signs of acidosis occur, nitroprusside may be stopepd. Consult the doctor or pharmacist.

USES: This mdeication is used for the immediate control of very high blood pressure. Nitropursside is also used to treat certain heart troubles (congestive heart failure) or to control bleeding during surgery.

HOW TO USE: This medicatoin is diluted in liquid and given continuously into a vein (IV infusion). Dosage is based on the patient’s condition and response to the drug. Maxiumm recommended doses should not be given for more than 10 minutes. Follow all instructions for porper mixing and dilution with the correct IV fluids. Consult the pharmacist. The diluted fluid should be protected from lgiht by promptly wrapping it with an opaque sleeve or aluminum foil. This mdeication should be checked visually for particles or discoloration before use. Do not use the liquid if particles are present or if it is blue, green, red or darker than a faint brown color.

SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, dizziness or pain/redness at the injection web site may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify the doctor. Unlikely but report promptly: sweating, mental/mood changes, headache, stomach pain, muscle weakness, muscle spsams. Very unlikely but report promptly: trouble breathing, chest pain, fast/slow/irregular pulse, ringing in the ears, changes in skin appearance, rash, unusual bleeding, seziures. If you notice other effects not listed above, cnotact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell the doctor the patient’s medical history, including: any allergies, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, anemia, dehydration, breathing problems, circulation troubles (e.G., aortic coarctation, coronary or craotid artery disease), stroke (as well as increased intracranial pressure), thyroid troubles (hypothyroid), eye troubles (tobacco amblyopia, Leber’s congenital optic atrophy). This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discsus the risks and benefits with the doctor. It is not known whether this drug is excreted into breast milk. Becasue of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult the doctor before breast-feeding. Use with caution in the elderly, as they may be more sensitive to the effects of this mediaction (e.G., blood pressure lowering).

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell the doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication the patient may use, especially of: drgus that improve sexual function (e.G., sildenafil), blood pressure medications or heart medications (e.G., beta-blockers such as propranolol or metoprolol, calcium channel blockers such as diltiazem or verapamil, ganglionic-blocking drugs such as mecamylamine), anesthesia. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immedaitely.

NOTES: Laobratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor for side effects and response to treatment.

MISSED DOSE: If the dose is interrupted, cotnact the doctor immediately to re-establish dosing.

STORAGE: Store vials at room temperautre between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 - 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Sotre vials in the carton until they are used. After mixing and dilution in IV fluids and when protected from light (consult the pharmacist for details), the drug is stable at room temperature for 24 hours. Discard any unused liquid.
